Bridal mehndi is the one design you can't redo, so it pays to plan it like the rest of the wedding. This guide walks through the decisions in the order you'll make them: booking an artist, the trial, the timing that gives the deepest colour on the day, what it costs, and how to look after it.
When to book your artist
Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for most dates. For weddings between November and February, the busiest season, book 2 to 3 months ahead: the best-known artists in each city fill their peak dates first, and many take a deposit to hold your date.
When you book, agree:
- the date, time and place (your home, their studio, or the venue);
- how far the design goes: hands to the wrist, mid-arm or elbow, and whether feet are included;
- whether they bring a team, which shortens the session a lot;
- the price, the deposit, and what happens if the date moves.

- Look at their recent work in your style. An artist known for bold Arabic trails may not be the one for dense Rajasthani figures, and the reverse. Look for close photos of real hands, not only edited reels.
- Ask what is in their paste. Natural henna is made from henna powder with lemon juice or water, sugar and an essential oil. Paste that stains black within an hour is not natural henna; see is black henna safe.
- Ask about a trial. Most bridal artists offer one, sometimes for a small charge.
- Check how they work on the day: how many hours they need, whether they bring helpers, and when they plan to start.
Find artists near you. See local artists' work and what they typically charge.
The trial
Have your trial 2 to 4 weeks before the wedding. A small design on the palm and wrist is enough. It shows you three things you can't judge from photos:
- how their lines look on your skin, up close;
- how dark the paste stains on you, and how the colour develops over two days;
- whether your skin reacts. Natural henna rarely causes a problem, but a reaction found at the trial is far better than one found on the day.
Timing: when to apply for the deepest colour
Mehndi does not look its best when the paste comes off. The stain starts orange and darkens over the next 24 to 48 hours, so the timing works backwards from the wedding:
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 2 days before, afternoon or evening | Mehndi is applied (many families hold the mehndi ceremony now) |
| That night | Paste stays on overnight, ideally 8 to 12 hours |
| 1 day before, morning | Scrape the paste off, without water |
| The rest of that day | Keep hands and feet away from water; the colour deepens |
| Wedding day | The colour is at its darkest |
If the ceremony is only one day before, the colour will still be good on the day, just a shade lighter.
How long it takes: a full bridal design on both hands to the elbow usually takes 3 to 5 hours for one artist, and 5 to 7 hours with feet. A second artist roughly halves that. Eat first, keep a drink with a straw nearby, and plan the bathroom break before the paste goes on.
What bridal mehndi costs
Across the cities we track, artists' listed starting prices are typically around ₹3,500. Starting prices are for the simplest package; full bridal work costs more. The price depends on:
- coverage: to the wrist, mid-arm or elbow, and feet;
- detail: figures, portraits of the couple and hidden names take longer;
- the artist: well-known artists charge more, especially for peak dates;
- home visits and travel, and early-morning or late-night sessions;
- guests: many artists offer a package for the family, priced per hand.

Hiding the groom's name
A tradition many couples keep: the groom's name, or his initials, are hidden somewhere in the design, and he has to find them. Ask your artist to work the letters into a motif rather than open skin: the middle of a flower, inside a paisley, along a bangle band. See name mehndi designs for ideas.
Getting the darkest colour
- Start with clean, dry skin: no lotion or oil on the day, and no waxing or scrubbing in the 24 hours before.
- Keep your hands warm while the paste dries.
- Once it is half dry, dab on a little lemon juice mixed with sugar so it stays on and keeps working.
- Keep the paste on overnight, and scrape it off rather than washing it.
The full method is in how to make mehndi dark.
Aftercare
- Keep water away for as long as you can after removing the paste, at least 12 hours.
- From the next day, rub in a little coconut or mustard oil or a natural balm before washing your hands. It protects the stain.
- Avoid chlorine, harsh soaps, sanitiser and scrubbing in the first days.
- Bridal mehndi usually lasts 1 to 3 weeks, longest on the palms.

Can I get mehndi done on the wedding day itself?
You can, but the colour will be at its lightest. Apply it at least a day before, two if you can.
Should my feet be done at the same time?
Usually yes, in the same session. Feet stain darker than most of the hand but take longer to dry, so plan to stay seated for a while.
Is it okay to wash my hands right after removing the paste?
Wait as long as you can, at least 12 hours. Water in the first hours stops the colour from darkening.
