What is Arabic mehndi?
Arabic mehndi uses bold, flowing trails of flowers and leaves, usually running diagonally from the fingers across the hand towards the wrist, with plenty of open skin between them. It is quicker to apply than traditional Indian mehndi and stands out from a distance.

What is the difference between Arabic and Indian mehndi?
Indian designs fill most of the hand with fine, dense patterns such as mandalas, nets and figures. Arabic designs leave open skin and use bolder lines in a trail. Pakistani designs sit between the two: fine lines like Indian work, with Arabic-style flow and lots of shading.
Which stains darker, the palm or the back of the hand?
The palm, because the skin there is thicker. Designs on the back of the hand come out lighter and fade a little sooner, so keep the paste on longer there.

How it works →How long does mehndi last?
Usually one to three weeks. Palms and soles hold colour longest because the skin there is thicker; the back of the hand fades sooner. Frequent washing, scrubbing and sanitiser make it fade faster.
Is black henna safe?
No. Natural henna never stains black: it goes from orange to brown or deep maroon. "Black henna" usually contains PPD, a hair-dye chemical that can cause blisters, scars and a lifelong allergy. Use only natural henna and do a small patch test a day before a large design.
